6 New Year’s Resolutions to Set for Healthy Eyes in 2025

The new year is just around the corner, so it’s the perfect time to commit to a handful of new, healthy habits that support and maintain your eyesight.

In this blog, Clearview Vision Institute offers six ideas for eye-related New Year’s Resolutions. Implementing these practices ensures you can enjoy healthy eyes and superior vision for another year (and beyond).

1. Schedule your next eye exam

Regular eye examinations play a crucial role in eye health. Consequently, it’s extremely important to visit your favourite Toronto vision clinic once a year for a comprehensive exam.

Many eye-related conditions do not present symptoms in their early stages, so these appointments are your only hope for early detection. It’s also much easier (and more effective) to treat issues early.

During your annual appointment, an eye care professional checks your eyes for early signs of conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration. If you have another medical condition that can affect your eyesight, like diabetes, these exams are even more important.

Your optometrist also takes this opportunity to test your vision. Myopia (nearsightedness) tends to worsen with time, so your vision should be monitored. That way, your prescription can be updated as your vision changes. Wearing the correct prescription prevents eye strain.

2. Wear sunglasses consistently

Prolonged exposure to UV radiation damages your eyes and can lead to a variety of eye health and vision-related problems. Sunlight pierces the eye, where it can harm the eye’s surface tissues, cornea, lens, and retina. Since clouds do not block UV rays, you must protect your eyes even on cloudy days.

Wearing a pair of high-quality sunglasses helps protect your eyes from the sun’s damaging rays. The sunglasses should offer 100% UV protection or UV400 protection, and block both UV-A and UV-B radiation. This helps minimize your risk of developing a serious eye condition like macular degeneration or eye cancer. You’re also better protected against cataracts, eye growths (like pterygium), and worsening vision.

In 2025, commit to wearing sunglasses year-round to safeguard your vision. If you already wear eyeglasses, invest in a pair of prescription sunglasses, too. A wide-brimmed hat offers additional protection on particularly sunny days.

3. Practise better contact lens hygiene

When you’re tired at the end of the day, you may be tempted to skip taking care of your contact lenses. However, proper contact lens hygiene is very important for the health of your eyes. No matter how great your exhaustion or how strong the temptation is, you must always follow your contact lens hygiene regime at the end of every day.

Neglecting to care for your contact lenses increases your chances of an unwanted eye infection. Always stick to the cleaning and safety recommendations laid out by your eye doctor.

Additionally, do not wear your contact lenses for longer than the recommended hours per day. Keep track of the amount of time that you wear your contacts to avoid wearing them for longer than is healthy.

4. Remove eye makeup before going to bed

If you wear makeup, you must remove it before bed at night. Leftover makeup forms a crusty buildup at the base of the lashes, which can block glands. This can lead to irritation, itchiness, infections, and uncomfortable styes.

Your eyelids are very sensitive, so you need to treat them with care. And that involves removing makeup at the end of the day, especially eye makeup like mascara and eyeliner.

Furthermore, sleeping with mascara on consistently can damage your eyelashes. Your eyelashes may become overly dry, brittle, and even fall out.

5. Limit screen time and take breaks

Spending prolonged periods of time staring at a computer or phone screen can result in digital eye strain. After all, your eyes are focusing intently for many hours at a time. This exhausts the tiny muscles in your eye, which have to work harder for longer than is natural.

We also tend to blink less while looking at a screen. This can cause dry eyes, in addition to eye strain and blurred vision.

In our digital world, it’s impossible to entirely eliminate screen time. Many jobs require working on a computer, so you may not be able to avoid looking at a screen for 7-plus hours a day.

Keeping this in mind, optometrists created the 20/20/20 rule to help minimize eye strain in the modern age. The rule is simple: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to focus on something 20 feet away.

Of course, you should strive to minimize screen time whenever possible. We also recommend switching your devices to “night mode” in the evening and lowering the brightness to further help reduce eye strain.

6. Improve your vision with LASIK

Are you tired of wearing prescription eyeglasses or contacts? The new year is the perfect time to make a change. LASIK and laser eye surgery correct your vision so you no longer have to wear glasses or contact lenses.

The procedure is painless and only takes about 10 minutes for both eyes. Plus, the results are practically immediate. You will begin to see better the day after surgery and enjoy the full results within 2–3 months.

At Clearview Vision Institute, we offer Custom Bladeless LASIK to our patients. This is the most advanced LASIK technology available in North America, delivering more precise results in a safer procedure than traditional LASIK.

Many of our patients also feel more comfortable knowing that this process does not involve any blades. It’s an example of how Clearview Vision Institute is leading the way in transformative laser eye procedures in Canada.
